Paddy Power Press Release Bets Fly in on Dublin Airports New Name 14th July 2010
(13 July 2010) According to reports, the Government are planning on renaming Dublin Airport after former Fianna Fail Taoiseach Sean Lemass.
Paddy Power are quoting odds of just 1/5 that Dublin will be renamed after the former statesman and Aer Lingus founder.
However, although the name Lemass is unlikely to be met with much objection, there are a lot of other names being suggested by punters, some of which include founder and former leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party Charles Stewart Parnell at 8/1, revolutionary leader Michael Collins at 12/1 and writer and poet Oscar Wilde at 40/1.
There has even been a handful of bets placed on Cork man Roy Keane, Boyzone singer Stephen Gately, Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary and U2 frontman Bono at odds as big as 500/1!
As well as speculating on what name Dublin Airport will be given, Paddy Power are also quoting odds on what Cork Airport will become known as should the Government decide to rename the Rebel County too.
The “Big Fella” Michael Collins is the clear 7/4 favourite followed by playwright, author and politician Terence McSwiney at 2/1. Local footballing legend Roy Keane is 14/1 while Eddie Hobbs and Stephen Ireland are 100/1 and 500/1 outsiders.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “Airports all over the world are named after famous people. There's JFK and Charles de Gaulle while closer to home we have George Best Belfast City Airport, so it makes perfect sense to rename Dublin, but judging by the betting it would seem there are just too many Irish greats to choose from!”
