If you fancy being one of the first on the slopes next season, a high-altitude resort is your best bet for that all important snowfall. Higher resorts generally mean better snow conditions, making them a great choice for early-season skiing in December.

Crystal Ski have compiled some of their favourite high-altitude resorts to visit in December below, from beginner favourites like Soldeu to mixed ability slopes like those in Obergurgl.

Passo Tonale, Italy

Straddling a mountain pass that links the Trentino and Lombardy regions, Passo Tonale (above) is an excellent pick for families and beginners going to Italy this December. The 100km ski area has fast lifts and quiet runs that are ideal for anyone starting out, and there’s even a gentle blue on the Presena glacier, so you can get your first taste of glacier skiing. Most of the area sits above 1,800m high, meaning that the snow conditions are usually great all winter, right from the start of season.

Obergurgl, Austria

Up at 1,930m, Obergurgl (above) is one of the highest villages in the Alps, making it hard to beat for reliable snow conditions, especially in December. The ski area packs in plenty of variety from gentle nursery slopes to tree-lined trails and wide-open pistes. The resort offers over 100km of blue and red slopes, making it an ideal visit for skiiers of all abilities.

Chamonix, France

Chamonix is one of the oldest and most prestigious resorts in France. The 150km area is relatively small compared to others in the country, but its range of challenging terrain and red and black runs is unbeatable for experienced skiers. While the town sits at roughly 1,035m, the ski areas reach impressive heights, ranging up to 3,300m and the Aiguille du Midi lift going as high as 3,842m.

Soldeu, Andorra

Soldeu is in the middle of the Grandvalira, located at 1,800m, with skiing reaching up to 2,640m offering reliable snow conditions from December to April. Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt is known for having some of the highest slopes in Europe, up to 3,883m. The Swiss resort offers 350km of intermediate and advanced terrain on reds and blues, as well as wide-open glacier skiing. The picture-postcard perfect town is located beneath the Matterhorn, promising a gorgeous view in addition to stellar December skiing conditions thanks to it’s high altitude.
