Ireland’s leading travel health group, Tropical Medical Bureau (TMB), have revealed the most popular long-haul destinations that Irish people have travelled to in 2022. TMB has reported a rise in demand for travel vaccines this year, exceeding 2019 levels.

This list indicates a sense of normalcy returning to travel as TMB reports a huge rise in demand for travel vaccines, exceeding 2019 levels. The list displays parallels with TMB’s list of top-ranking long-haul destinations in 2019, which was also dominated by Southeast Asian destinations, with Thailand ranking first, followed by Vietnam, India, and Indonesia.
TMB CEO, Andrew Lewis said “We are delighted to have seen demand for travel vaccines in 2022 reach and exceed pre-covid levels. Since the middle of this year, we have seen increasing demand with a large number of honeymooners, families and students and now we’re seeing the return of corporate travel. We expect a significant rebound in corporate travel in 2023.”
Australia Rises in the Ranks
For 20–30-year-old age bracket, Australia rises to 8th place in TMB’s top travel destinations of 2022. This may be unsurprising to some following the results of the latest Central Statistics Office Population and Migration Estimates released this August, estimating that 27,600 Irish people left Ireland to live abroad in the year to April 2022. A recent survey commissioned by the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI), also revealed that over 70% of adults aged between 18 – 24 years old are looking at the possibility of moving away from Ireland.
Commenting on this figure, TMB’s Founder and Group Medical Officer, Dr. Fry said ‘Since Australia re-opened in February this year, we have seen a huge number of young people in their twenties booking their pre-travel vaccinations with us prior to emigrating. Many visit Southeast Asia on their journey to Australia and so multiple vaccinations may be required to ensure can enjoy their travels and arrive to Australia healthy.”
Millennials Take to South America
TMB have noted a clear trend in the 30- to 35-year-old group, with five out of the top ten destinations of this cohort in South America. Peru, Columbia, Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia are the countries of choice for Millennials venturing to this part of the world.
At the beginning of 2022, TMB’s list of top-ranking long-haul destinations was dominated by South American and Central American countries. In comparison to many other long-haul destinations, these places had some of the most lenient entrance restrictions and COVID-19 rules for most of this year.
Generally, vaccines should be considered for all travellers going to areas outside of Western Europe, North America and Australia and New Zealand. You can find a full list of destinations and vaccines required at https://www.tmb.ie/destinations
Travel vaccines should be started at least 4 weeks before the journey if possible. Those planning to live abroad for long periods, or those undertaking extensive trekking holidays, should plan to start their vaccine courses up to 6 months before they leave.
