VISIT PORTUGAL CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND AT DALKEY BOOK FESTIVAL

Visit Portugal has thanked the many visitors, speakers, partners and festivalgoers following a successful weekend at the Dalkey Book Festival, celebrating Portuguese culture, literature, gastronomy, art and music.

Throughout the festival, audiences engaged with a diverse programme designed to showcase the many facets of Portugal’s cultural identity and tourism offering. From literary discussions and cultural conversations to wine tastings, artistic workshops and live music performances, visitors were invited to experience the authenticity, creativity and warmth that define Portugal.

The weekend’s literary programme featured acclaimed Portuguese author Afonso Reis Cabral, winner of the José Saramago Prize, in conversation with Barbara Scully during The Heart of Portugal. Drawing on his book, Take Me with You – Portugal’s National Road 2 on Foot, Cabral shared reflections from his journey across Portugal and offered audiences a unique insight into the landscapes, communities and traditions that shape the country.

Cabral also joined Portuguese winemaker Madalena Vidigal and artist Susana Cereja for the panel discussion Portugal: Europe’s Cultural Gem, moderated by David McWilliams. The conversation explored Portugal’s rich cultural heritage, contemporary creativity, gastronomy, wine traditions and regional diversity, highlighting the experiences that continue to attract visitors from around the world.
At Cornernote café, visitors enjoyed a series of events celebrating Portuguese wine, gastronomy, art and music.

Stephen Firth, co-founder of Azouro, hosted Wine Pairs with Gastronomy, introducing guests to Portuguese wines and regional produce.

Portuguese winemaker Madalena Vidigal led Wine Pairs with Portugal, sharing insights into Portugal’s wine regions, traditions and growing wine tourism sector.

Artist Susana Cereja welcomed participants to Wine Pairs with Art, a hands-on workshop inspired by Portuguese heritage and historical crafts.

Throughout the weekend, Portuguese vocalist Filipa Quintino returned to Dalkey to perform a series of live music sessions, helping to create an authentic Portuguese atmosphere for visitors.

Carlos Oliveira, Director of Visit Portugal Ireland, said:

“We would like to thank everyone who attended our events throughout the weekend and helped make the programme such a success.

“The festival provided a wonderful opportunity to share the many dimensions of Portugal with Irish audiences. Through literature, food, wine, art and music, visitors experienced the richness of our culture and the authenticity that makes Portugal such a special destination.”

The strong attendance across the programme reflected the enduring interest among Irish travellers in exploring Portugal’s diverse regions, cultural experiences, gastronomy, wine tourism and year-round visitor offering. Visit Portugal looks forward to continuing to strengthen cultural and tourism links between Ireland and Portugal in the years ahead.
