Barbados Welcomes British Airways Airlift Expansion

London Gatwick flight arrived Sunday, kicking off historic triple-daily winter flights and a first-ever double-daily summer schedule.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, October 27, 2026 — The first flight of the relaunched daily direct British Airways service from London Gatwick (LGW) arrived Sunday afternoon. The flight deck, cabin crew, and 135 passengers enjoyed an authentically Barbadian welcome, with stilt walkers dancing to lively music from a Tuk Band and received specialty gifts from the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.

The renewed year-round daily service represents the largest-ever boost in British Airways airlift to the island and marks a historic expansion in air connectivity between the United Kingdom and Barbados.

For the first time ever, there will be three daily direct British Airways flights from the UK to Barbados: one from Gatwick and two from London Heathrow (LHR). The Gatwick service will continue through Summer 2027, establishing British Airways’ first-ever double-daily summer schedule to the island.

This route expansion offers greater travel flexibility and supports growing demand for year-round travel to Barbados. “With a remarkable 70% increase in seats for the winter season and an over 100% increase in summer 2027 capacity, the new route could deliver 120,000 additional seats to Barbados each year,” said Cheryl Cumberbatch, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport during the welcoming ceremony. “It also strengthens connectivity, creating more opportunities for travellers from across the United Kingdom, Europe, the African continent, the Middle East, and beyond to experience the island,” she added.

Sunday also marked the start of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) winter season, which is promising to be action-packed for Barbados. “We are gearing up to welcome visitors for a winter season filled with wellness, culture, and celebration. With highlights including the RBC Run Barbados Marathon and Wellness Weekend, Barbados Sailing Week, the Barbados Open Water Festival, the Barbados Food and Rum Festival, and the island’s 60th Independence celebrations, guests will have plenty to experience,” said Cheryl Carter, Chief Operations Officer at BTMI.

Furthermore, the year-round commitment ensures seamless visitor access to Barbados’ premier summer events, such as the Crop Over Festival, Barbados Ninja Throwdown, Dive Fest, and Rally Barbados. Visitors will also benefit from an expanding portfolio of world-class accommodations and luxury culinary experiences.

Rooted in deep cultural ties and a shared history, the UK continues to be one of Barbados’ leading tourism source markets. “This lasting connection is perfectly captured by our 72-year partnership with British Airways, a bond that began with their first flight on April 1, 1954,” explained Elan Mottley Harris, Director of UK for BTMI.

Local officials expressed immense gratitude to the flight deck, cabin crew, airport staff, and ground operators for maintaining a benchmark of operational excellence, emphasising a collective mission to drive sustainable tourism growth, foster industry innovation, and deliver exceptional travel experiences for global visitors.
