The Outcome of the UNWTO Mayors Forum for Sustainable Urban Tourism

Press release date: April 8th 2019

The 5th of April saw the inaugural UNWTO Mayors Forum for Sustainable Urban Tourism – ‘Cities for all: building cities for citizens and visitors’, transpire in Lisbon, Portugal.

In a time of intense debate over the growing number of tourists as well as the livability and sustainability of cities, this event encouraged conversation and recognised the importance of working together to respond to the current and upcoming challenges cities are facing.

The invitation-only event was organised by The World Tourism Organisation and the Ministry of Economy of Portugal and the Lisbon Municipality.

Mayors, Ministers of Tourism, relevant companies and organisations gathered from around the world to discuss how to tackle the aforementioned issues.

Processes were discussed regarding how to develop and manage tourism whilst still promoting economic growth, social inclusion and environmental sustainability.

The forum promoted the integration of tourism into the urban development agenda. Key priorities and alliances were set to build inclusive and sustainable cities for all, a commitment which is hoped to strengthen with the adoption of the Lisbon Declaration on Sustainable Urban Tourism.
