Yesterday, Thursday 30th April 2020, Portugal announced its lockdown exit plan – the first stage of which will begin on Monday 4th May.
In a televised address, the Prime Minister in Portugal spoke to the nation to lift the state of emergency, which is in place up to May 2nd, and communicate a roadmap to be reviewed every 15 days.
This roadmap is based on three important dates: May 4th, May 18th and June 1st. A number of important measures will also be kept in place, including the compulsory wearing of masks in several public spaces, such as on public transport.
Below you see the most relevant steps for each stage:
Monday 4th May 2020
- Opening of small businesses with less than 200 square meters
- Opening of hairdressers (< 200m2) by appointment
- Opening of bookstores
- Opening of golf courses and tennis/ paddle facilities
- Opening of automobile stands
Monday 18th May 2020
- Opening of stores with less than 400 square meters
- Opening of restaurants, cafés and outdoor cafés (new rules for which will be published on Saturday, May 2nd May)
- Opening of museums, palaces and libraries
Monday 1st June 2020
- Opening of shopping centres
- Opening of cinemas and theatres
The following measures will apply in all stages:
- Hygiene etiquette and social distancing
- Mandatory use of masks indoors (public transportation, retail stores, services etc)
- Maximum capacity per 100 m2 = 5 people
Amidst the current Covid-19 Pandemic, Portugal has created a “Clean & Safe” stamp of approval which will be awarded to tourist companies that are compliant with hygiene and cleaning requirements for the prevention and control of Covid-19 and other possible infections.
Companies that are registered with the National Tourist Authority will be able to request this stamp. Once a company has passed the quality standards, they can display their stamp on their premises and online.
